Love and understanding it he key to a long lasting marriage, according to a Bilton couple.

Bill and Muriel Hammond were joined by family and friends to celebrate 60 happy years together.

The couple’s diamond anniversary was on July 31.

Muriel, 85 and Bill, 81, of Lawford Lane, tied the knot at Rugby Register Office in 1954.

“We met in 1952 while Bill was a labourer working for a building firm and I was working as a domestic at St Cross Hospital,” said Muriel, who was born in Wales.

They both also worked at the Territorial Army.

The couple went on to have two sons, David and Ian, four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

“We had a garden party to celebrate our anniversary,” said Bill.

They said it was a happy occasion that brought back a lot of good memories.

The couple would like to thank everybody who celebrated with them and described their marriage as ‘perfect’.

The couple believe the secret to a long-lasting and happy marriage is to always give and take, love and understand one another.
