The incidents happened in Station Road in Clifton, where a black Audi Q5 was taken; Sigwels Road, Cawston where a bright blue Audi S3 was taken; and Braids Close, Rugby where a black Seat Leon went.

In each case the offenders had broken into the property and stolen the car keys.

The incidents are being investigated by the proactive CID team at Rugby where officers are urging people make sure they lock up their properties at night.

Temporary Det Sgt Stephen Flavell said: “I am concerned that, with the nicer weather coming, people will forget about locking their doors and windows at night and make life easy for our offenders. It is likely that the thieves are just trying door handles and if they find one open they are in, find the keys and make off with your car.

“There will be increased overnight policing patrols in Rugby, but the more you can do to make life difficult for criminals the better.”

To cut the risk of burglary in your home, police say:

- lock up and check all doors last thing at night - don’t assume someone else in the family has done so;

- close and lock all windows which are accessible to thieves, such as those on flat roofs;

- lock and secure all doors and windows even if you are just popping out for a few minutes - opportunist thieves work quickly!

- do not leave anything valuable, such as car keys, in easily accessible places.
