Police in Rugby have now released a description of the person they believe it responsible for an assault on New Year’s Day.

Officers say they are keen to trace the man who believe is responsible for the unprovoked attack that happened between 2 and 2.30am on Wednesday January 1 in Edward Street, Rugby.

He is described as a medium build white male, around 5ft 8ins tall in his late 30s to early 40s with short dark hair.

He was wearing jeans and a dark jacket.

A spokesman for Warwickshire Police said: “The assault is believed to have occurred when a male who is in his 50s attempted to diffuse an argument between a male and female that was ongoing in the street near to the TA centre.

“The male attempting to diffuse the argument, was repeatedly punched to the face and chest by the male, and fell to the floor where the assault continued resulting in serious facial injuries.”

Officers believe the assault may have been witnessed by a male and female who stopped at the scene in a black BMW car and also by a male standing near to the TA centre at that time, and are asking these people in particular to please come forward.

Any witnesses are please asked to contact DC 779 Andy Holloway on 01788 541111 ext 6121 or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
