Red Dwarf star Chris Barrie will be the special guest at Kuni’s Coffee & Comics when it opens for business in Rugby town centre this Friday.

The man who played Rimmer in the cult sci-fi comedy will welcome guests to the ‘lifestyle coffee shop’, which will sell comics, toys, posters and collectables, and be on hand to sign autographs between 4pm and 8pm.

Other prominent roles played by Chris include Hilary, Angelina Jolie’s butler in the Tomb Raider films, and Gordon Brittas, the leisure centre manager immortalised in the BBC One sitcom The Brittas Empire.

Kuni’s will offer customers of coffee, ice cream shakes, American candy, comic books, anime, manga, toys and much more. Employing 16 people, it will occupy 150 square metres of prime retail space at 33–34 High Street.

The interior has been fitted out to ensure all seating locations have power, head-phone sockets for audio from the TV screens and free Wi-Fi.

Bryan Cooney, managing director of Kuni Coffee Ltd, said: “Rugby is a great place to do business and we are really excited to be opening in the town. We have invested heavily in the new business and see Rugby as the perfect fit for what we offer and a platform for us to expand throughout the Midlands.”

“I would like to say a special thank you to Rugby First who were able to identify a range of potential locations in the town as well as provide useful contacts to help us get the shop open quickly. Chris and I look forward to welcoming you on Friday where we will also have some exciting giveaways and costumed characters for you to meet and have your photograph taken with.”

Aftab Gaffar, Rugby First managing director, said: “Kuni’s Coffee & Comics is a really exciting concept and I am delighted that they have chosen Rugby as a base for their exciting expansion plans. They are a very welcome addition to the current high street mix and will complement it well.”
