Renovation work has taken place at one of Rugby’s best-loved churches after a successful fundraising drive.

More than £20,0000 was raised to restore stonework at St. Marie’s Church in Dunchurch Road as part of a £100,000 appeal.

Parish priest Father Tony Furlong said it completes the first of four phases of work planned for the building.

He said: “Phase 1 is now complete and paid for through the generosity of our parishioners.

“Over £20,000 has been raised. We have now received a grant for £10,000 from the Rugby Benevolent Trust which will cover a good part of the cost of phase 2, due to begin in March.”

The latest cheque was presented to the church just before Christmas.

Father Tony added: “Beautiful renovation work has already finished and can be clearly seen.

“It’s one of Rugby’s landmarks and there must be very few who have never crossed its threshold for baptisms, weddings or funerals
