The Friends of St Cross held a cash collection at Sainsbury’s and added £574 to its Diamond Jubilee Appeal.

Rugby’s Mayor, Councillor Ramesh Srivastava, attended the event at the Dunchurch Road store and has selected the Friends as his charity of the year.

He said: “Rugby is growing fast and better medical facilities are definitely needed.

“In the present economic situation organisations like the Friends of the Hospital of St Cross, run by volunteers, are making a significant contribution to the health services in the town.”

The Advertiser’s coverage of the Appeal has prompted another reader to give a generous donation.

A Rugby woman, who wants to remain anonymous, gave £1,000 after reading a recent article about the Friends funding surgical equipment.

She had both a hip and a knee replacement at St Cross in recent years and said she had exceptional treatment and aftercare at the ‘friendly’ hospital.

So far the Diamond Jubilee Appeal has raised more than £13,000.
