Trip of hope for brave young Rugby boy Adrian

"Wonderful": Adrian Secareanu

A boy who suffers from a rare cancer needs to raise £10,000 to travel to America for treatment that could save his life.

Adrian Secareanu, 12, of Wentworth Road, Overslade, has mucoepidermoid carcinoma – a tumour in his neck and jaw.

He is set to travel to Florida for proton therapy after the National Specialised Commissioning Team and the Proton Therapy Clinical Reference Panel agreed to cover the cost of the treatment through the NHS.

Adrian, who celebrated his 12th birthday in March, said: “This is an opportunity to stop the tumour completely and get back to a normal life.

“Having the proton therapy will be a step closer to achieving that.”

He needs to spend a minimum of three months in America and the £10,000 is needed to support Adrian’s parents being away from the UK for such a lengthy period.

National charity Kids ‘N’ Cancer has launched the fundraising campaign to support Adrian’s case.

Mum Corina, a nurse at Rugby’s St Cross Hospital, added: “You think something like this wouldn’t happen to you and that it can’t touch you.”

She said Adrian is a wonderful, polite child.

“We just want our lives back,” she said.

“It’s been hard but we have tried to keep a normal life as much as we can. For his birthday, we went to the cinema with his friends like any other 12-year-old boy.”

She said the family is staying strong for Adrian.

“He can become frightened and needs our support and encouragement,” added Corina.

To support the fundraising campaign, Adrian’s family contacted Kids ‘N’ Cancer – the leading organisation in the UK for Proton Therapy.
