A Rugby man beat off cut-throat competition to be crowned Best Wet Shaving Barber of the West Midlands after winning a regional final of a national contest.
Shakar Bakani, of Mojo Barbershop in Church Street, took the title after coming top in a shave-off against 14 other barbers at the event in Cardiff.
The finalists were assessed on a number of different criteria, including razor technique, after-shave routine, health and safety, and general efficiency. Shakar impressed the judges the most with every aspect of his cut-throat shave.
He is now preparing for the national final of the event, organised by the British Barbers’ Association and grooming brand The BlueBeards Revenge.
Shakar, who has been a barber for 26 years, said: “I was absolutely thrilled to make the regionals, as I was up against some really outstanding talent.
“I can hardly believe that I’ve made it to the final, but at the same time it’s really good to see all of my hard work paying off. I’m fairly confident about my chances.”
The final will feature a special “speed-shaving” tournament inside a boxing ring at the luxurious Celtic Manor Hotel, near Newport, on Sunday May 25.
Shakar and seven other barbers will battle it out for the prestigious title of Britain’s Best Wet Shaving Barber. The winner will also land a starring role in a shaving commercial and £3,000 of male grooming products.
Beforehand, Shakar says he will be getting plenty of practice.
“Going to a barber for a wet shave is becoming more popular,” he added. “I have about 20 customers in an average week.
“For weddings I have sometimes shaved 15 gentlemen in a single morning.
“I always tell people if you’ve never had a traditional wet shave at a barbershop, you just don’t know what it’s like to have a proper shave.”
