A 22-year-old independent candidate standing in May's Police and Crime Commissioner election promised a fresh approach and is certainly doing things differently.

On Saturday night (February 20) Ben Twomey and his campaign team will be out in Rugby town centre taking in the local nightlife.

Having grown up in the town, Ben is no stranger to a night out in Rugby. This time though, he will be bringing along a camera crew to set some things straight.

Ben said: “Friday and Saturday night is the busiest time of the week for Warwickshire Police. For that reason, it cannot be ignored by those seeking election as PCC.

“A key part of my campaign is about tackling crime at its source. If the town centre is a major source of crime then it is only right that we discover for ourselves where the issues are.

“I want to find out more about who is out, what their story is, and what they expect from their town centre at the weekend. I want to learn from a diverse range of perspectives and experiences: from clubbers to fast food workers, bar staff to bouncers, police officers to street pastors.”

Last year in Rugby town centre, Warwickshire Police recorded 357 anti-social behaviour incidents and 214 violent or sexual offences.

Ben said: “This may well be the first time a PCC candidate has ever engaged with people in this environment. For too long politicians have condemned elements of the clubbing scene without seeking any understanding of it.

“Let’s move beyond the media impression of drugs and violence to find out what really motivates people and makes them feel safer. So if you see me this Saturday please say hello, I’ll be with a camera crew so should be easy to spot!

“I am also hoping to meet people on Saturday nights in Leamington and Nuneaton in the near future, so watch this space.”
