550-berth Onley marina plan given go ahead

A major 550-berth marina at Onley has been given planning permission by Rugby Borough Council after a disagreement over conditions.

The controversial development was given planning per mission from the borough in November but was resubmitted to planning last week after a disagreement over conditions.

After some minor alterations to the legal document relating to the timing and scope of the agreement between the developer and the borough council, the plans are now set to go ahead, following their approval by the borough council’s planning committee last week.

The proposal led to a number of protests last year over concerns the building would spoil countryside and lead to overcrowding on the Oxford Canal, which runs through Rugby.

Actors Timothy West and Prunella Scales led one such protest at the site in October last year.

But Rugby planning officers disagreed, stating in a report said: “The development... will contribute toward improved economic, social and sustainability in the area.”

The development will include a service docks, a boat repair facility, a car park, meadows, wetlands, woodlands, games areas and a shop, café, restaurant and marina centre.

It will be sited on land between Onley prison and the Oxford Canal.

The marina received a unanimous positive reaction from borough councillors when it was discussed at a meeting in November.

Cllr Neil Sandison said: “This is good, sustainable, green growth. This will help support the businesses on the canal corridor.

However, Tim Coghlan, from Braunston Marina, said: “No one wants this marina.

“The simple fact is the Braunston Canal is already the most congested on the network.”
