A diamond formation of trees for Rugby Diamond anniversary couple

A DIAMOND formation of oak trees has been planted by the council to mark the wedding anniversary of one of Rugby’s oldest couples.
The trees have been planted outside the Newbold home of George and Jose New, after one of the couple’s four children suggested it could be a great way to celebrate their 60th year of being together, Linda Harris, their daughter, rang up the borough council and suggested the idea, but was shocked when the council agreed and offered their services to plant the trees.
Mrs New said: “We can see the trees from our home so we’ll be able to watch them grow - it was a lovely idea and the council have been very helpful. We’ve had such a long and happy marriage and we’re so happy we’ve been allowed to plant the trees.”
Linda added: “I didn’t expect to get permission when I first asked the council, so it was such a nice surprise when they agreed.”
George and Jose wed on September 20, 1952 at Rugby Registry Office. They have four children, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, with two more on the way. Before he retired, George, who has lived in Newbold all his life, worked in the building trade while Jose held several office jobs in Rugby.
Mrs New added: “I’d say the secret to a long marriage lies in give and take – you have to compromise. We’re very similar though so that’s never been a problem. We’ve just really enjoyed our lives together and it’s nice to have something outside our home to remind us of that.”
She added: “Although we celebrated our Diamond anniversary in September, we waited until now to plant the trees as that’s the time the council’s tree-planting work takes place. Hopefully the oaks will be there a long time.”
