A new tourist attraction to open in Rugby?
A tourist attraction offering a range of fun rural pursuits and education classes could be built on land opposite Draycote Water.
Plans for a Centre for Rural Excellence (CRE) were approved by Rugby Borough Council on March 13. The business would offer camping and caravan facilities and activities including fishing, animal husbandry, gardening and crop cultivation.
There would also be practical courses on activities such as hedge laying, cob walling, thatching, land management and blacksmithing.
The facility would be open to the public and is likely to assist schools in Rugby and offer local families a fun day out. It’s also expected to help bring tourists to Rugby, a prospect that’s boosted by it being so close to Draycote Water and Leam Valley Golf Course.
On the planning document, the applicant said: “There is a severe shortage of any such educational facilities with Rugby Borough. The CRE will promote a diverse spectrum of rural pursuits on a daily basis all year round.”
The CRE would create four full-time jobs and several part time positions.
Dunchurch Parish Council said they also supported the plans.
SURVEY SAID PEOPLE WOULD BE INTERESTED
**The applicant conducted a small survey of 100 people at nearby Draycote Water to ascertain whether services on offer at the CRE would be in demand
**78 said they would be interested in taking part in rural workshops at the CRE
**The most popular classes in the survey were Self Sufficiency with 68 people interested, cooking with 70 interested and keeping poultry with 64 interested
**Just under half said they would caravan at the CRE, the rest would stay in nearby hotels
