An outdated box: views of the Protection of Rainsbrook Valley campaign group about Rugby’s crematorium plans
IMAGES showing how Rugby’s proposed new crematorium might look have been criticised by campaigners.
The Residents for the Protection of Rainsbrook Valley campaign group said it was “very disappointed” by the design which was released by Rugby Borough Council and Daventry District Council this week.
Group spokesman Lesley Link said: “We think it’s a blot on the landscape.
“The crematorium is sited on an exposed piece of land on the top of a ridge. It will be highly visible from Ashlawn Road and the villages of Barby and Kilsby. It has a flat roof and is box-shaped which bears no relation to the architectural style of the red-bricked, gabled 1930s houses around it on the estate.
“We’re very disappointed with the design. It’s a poorly designed box which will be out of date before it’s even built.”
The two neighbouring councils have been working together to develop plans for the facility, which has been designed to address a shortfall in cemetery space in Rugby and a need for a crematorium in the Rugby and Daventry area.
The artists’ impressions show how the crematorium building could look, and how it may fit into the landscape of the Rainsbrook Valley, off Ashlawn Road in Rugby.
Cllr Dr Mark Williams, Rugby Borough Council portfolio holder for ‘sustainable environment’, said: “We know from our community engagement meetings and from other feedback that our land off Ashlawn Road is well used and appreciated by the community, even though there is currently no right of access.
“Our plans will open-up this land for community use even further, while the building itself will respect and complement its environment.
“If given the go-ahead, the crematorium will sit in the surrounding landscape, making it almost invisible from the north and unobtrusive from the south.
“It will be a quality building in a restful environment, making it a fitting place to remember loved-ones.”
A planning application has been submitted on behalf of both councils.
A decision is due to be made by Rugby Borough Council’s planning committee on Wednesday (September 26) at 5.30pm.
