Announcement shocks workers as 378 jobs lost at Rolls-Royce in Ansty
AROUND 378 jobs are to go when Rolls-Royce’s UK defence operations in Ansty cease.
The firm has entered a consultation phase with trade unions over workers’ futures in a move that union Unite has blamed on Government spending cuts, in particular its decision to scrap the UK’s Harrier jump-jet fleet. However, there may be a glimmer of hope for workers as some extra work for Rolls-Royce will be arriving at the firm’s larger, more modern plant in Bristol from Germany.
Mark Pawsey MP said: “I was very concerned to learn from Roll Royce that they have started discussions with the Ansty workforce to jointly decide the best way forward for the site. I have been in contact with the company to seek reassurances that, firstly, any changes will be introduced without the need for compulsory redundancies. I’ll be pleased to work with unions and other politicians to ensure the impact on workers at Ansty is minimised.”
Cllr Heather Timms, borough Council portfolio holder for economic development, added: “This is very sad news, not least for the nearly 400 families who will be affected. The manufacturing centre located adjacent to the Rolls Royce plant has already had success in bringing investment and high skilled jobs to the borough. It’s a small consolation to hear the Alstom plant in Rugby is recruiting for 50 new positions. I would hope that Rolls-Royce employees will fill these posts.”
