Mary Beatrice celebrated her birthday recently - 102.

‘Feisty’ Mary Price celebrated her 102nd birthday last Monday and puts her longevity down to one thing - staying away from the doctors.

Mary, of Dickinson Court, Barby Road, Rugby, celebrated her milestone with family and friends.

“I enjoyed a coffee morning at Sainsbury’s,” she said.

“It was when the snow was really bad but I wasn’t going to let that put me off!”

She was born to Beatrice and Leonard Blott, the first of three sisters whom she has survived.

The family travelled around Alberta and Saskatchewan while her father tried to make a living in various occupations.

In 1919 the family returned from Canada and Mary grew up in Chippenham, Wiltshire where her father ran a successful drapery business.

Mary trained as a nurse at St Thomas’ Hospital in London but spent most of her life with her father in business until marrying James Price in 1942. A daughter, Beatrice Mary Blott Price, was born in 1945 and following a happy childhood in Chippenham, training as a teacher in Reading, Beatrice moved with her husband, Peter Long, to Rugby in 1970. Mary, who has been a widow since 1957, moved up from Chippenham to Rugby in 1973. She has two grandsons, Nick and Frazer, three great grandsons, Oliver, George and Archie.

She has been an active member of the Percival Guildhouse for many years and enjoyed learning Latin, debating in the Thursday Forum and bridge. Mary, described as “feisty” by her daughter, joked: “My secret to a long life is stay away from doctors!”
