Council apologise for street light failure after Rugby plunged into darkness

HUNDREDS of street lights across Rugby were switched off last night (Thursday) due to a technical fault.

Huge parts of the town were plunged into darkness just after 5pm last night.

Hundreds of street lights were also affected in Nuneaton and Bedworth.

A Warwickshire County Council spokesman said: “We apologise to those customers who experienced problems with street lights in Nuneaton, Bedworth and Rugby last night, this was due to an IT fault which we are working hard to correct. We will give further updates.”

In an attempt to save money, from tomorrow (Friday) the council will be switching off many of the street lights on main roads and estates between midnight and 5.30am (1am to 6.30am at weekends).

The council hopes to save £500,000 across Warwickshire, but some fear the cost of increased accidents and crime may make that a false economy.
