Council survey to help find solution to keep Warwickshire schools open during snow

A review has been commissioned into keeping schools and businesses open during severe winter weather.

Warwickshire County Council (WCC) is undertaking a survey to find any localised issues which prevent schools from opening after it has snowed.

A total of 215 of the county’s 249 schools decided to close in the recent snow.

Highway teams grit 46 per cent of the county’s roads.

Cllr Peter Butlin, portfolio holder for highways and Transport at WCC, said: “We will be contacting schools to find out what arrangements they already have in place, and what we can do to help them stay open in wintry conditions.

“Obviously it is not always possible to remain open if conditions are particularly adverse, but if schools keep their doors open then children can continue their education and parents are able to go to work.

“We already grit the doors of many of Warwickshire’s schools and this survey will allow us to look at the requirements of schools on an individual basis and do all that is reasonably practicable to keep them open.”

The survey will go out to headteachers before Easter and the results will be reviewed ahead of next winter’s gritting season.

Details of Warwickshire’s gritting routes are available at www.warwickshire.gov.uk/gritting.
