Councillor completes shift as Rugby community safety warden

A Rugby Borough Councillor has completed a shift as a community safety warden after asking to join the team for the day.
Cllr Dale Keeling, a ward councillor for Eastlands and a member of the council’s crime and disorder committee, asked for the experience after becoming particularly interested in how the council works with its partners to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour.
He joined Dean Cooke, community safety warden, on Sunday’s shift around Eastlands Ward and the town centre, to see exactly what is involved in the job. Duties included patrolling parks and allotment sites including the GEC Recreation Ground, and calling on vulnerable residents to check that everything is ok.
He also got to visit garage sites to check for fire risks, and visit known fly-tipping sites to report dumped rubbish and search for evidence.
Cllr Keeling said: “I was impressed with the range of duties that a community safety warden could be expected to perform as part of their shift. It is clear from my shift that the wardens are valued and well-respected by the communities that they serve.
“It was particularly good to see how Dean engages with young people whilst he is out and about. Often young people are perceived to be causing trouble, even when they are not, but Dean’s approach to dealing with low-level antisocial behaviour gave a very clear message that having fun is fine, but upsetting others most definitely isn’t.”
The Rugby community safety wardens routinely tackle a range of issues, including dog fouling, under-age smoking and drinking, fitting door alarms and providing welfare checks, reporting fly-tipping and other environmental crime, and advising residents on noise and other nuisances.
