Crime falling despite switch- off, say police

Crime in Rugby has continued to fall despite street lights being switched off in much of the town, according to the latest figures.
Police say between April 2012 and March 2013 overall crime in Rugby dropped 14.6 per cent. Home burglaries are also down 39.9 per cent, robbery down 16.4 per cent, vehicle crime down 11.3 per cent and serious violent crime down 7.5 per cent.
A spokesman from Warwickshire Police said: “There is no evidence at this time to suggest that the decision to turn off the street lighting in Rugby has had any affect on crime levels, which have been decreasing steadily since 1 April 2012.”
The spokesman added that police would continue to monitor crime with regards to street lighting along with Warwickshire County Council and residents.
Several readers have complained in recent weeks that they feel less safe when lights are off, and in one case an older lady fell and dislocated her shoulder in the darkness. Street lights in many parts of Rugby were turned off on February 1 and are now turned off from midnight on week nights except Friday and Saturday, when they are switched off at 1am.
