Volunteers are invited to help create a new woodland in Rugby this weekend.

The Woodland Trust and Rugby Borough Council are asking people to take their place in history by planting trees on Sunday to help create a Diamond Wood.

The Diamond Wood is one of 60 being created as part of the Trust’s Jubilee Woods Project, which has marked The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by creating hundreds of new woods across the country.

The open planting session will take place between 11am and 1pm on Sunday on land bordered by Ashlawn Road and Onley Lane, with staff from the council and charity hoping to plant hundreds of trees on the day as the first steps towards creating a 60 acre woodland country park.

Local schools will also be planting trees during the week prior to the community day.

Cllr Dr Mark Williams, Rugby Borough Council portfolio holder for sustainable environment, said: “We are delighted to start planting trees in the town with the Woodland Trust. This is just the start of our plans to create an area of native woodland which will provide an open green space for everyone to enjoy. We’re looking forward to seeing lots of people on the day, it may be muddy so please bring wellington boots or stout footwear and wrap up warm. It would also be helpful if people planting are able to bring a spade too.”
