FLOOD UPDATE: ambulance service praise two men for rescuing family

Two workmen came to the rescue of a woman and her three children after the car they were in ended up in a swollen ford near Rugby.

The force of the water had pinned the car against a bridge at Churchover Lane, Churchover

Hearing the incident, two workmen in the area went to their aid.

Warwickshire Fire Service was called to the incident who in turn alerted West Midlands Ambulance Service. The ambulance service’s control room received the call shortly after 6.05pm yesterday (Thursday).

A senior paramedic officer in a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance crew attended.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “On arrival of ambulance crews, the mother and her three children aged six months, six years and five years, were being looked after by the fire service. Crews were told that the car, which by this time was submerged in four feet of water with only the aerial showing, had been pinned against the bridge.

“Two workmen in the area had tried to open the car’s doors to get the four out but were unable to because of the force of the water against the side of the car. Fortunately, they were able to open the hatchback and drag the four out.

“The four were checked over by ambulance personnel and, other than being in shock from the cold and wet, they were not injured and not in need of hospital treatment. They were taken home in the ambulance.

“Had the car not been a hatchback and had the two men not come to their aid so quickly, the outcome may have been very different. Our praise must go to the two men for acting so quickly.
