Get in shape for the annual Rugby pancake race

RUGBY’S annual pancake race returns next month - and with it the chance to admire some fetching attempts at femininity from our town’s men.

The Shrove Tuesday tradition is organised by Rugby Rokeby Lions Club and this year will raise money for Rugby Young Carers.

Runners from either sex are invited, with all those taking part encouraged to don fancy dress - which, in the case of males, typically involves ladies’ clothes.

Lion Terry Byrne said: “We are approaching local individuals, groups and companies in an endeavour to maintain the tradition of a pancake pace in Rugby and also to invite any ladies to take part.

“The proceeds from this year’s race will be in support of the little-known Rugby Young Carers group, who in themselves support over 200 young people in the Rugby area, some as young as eight years old, in their caring for others - usually to their own detriment.”

The race - which in reality is less competitive than it sounds - will be held on February 12 in Sheep Street. Preliminary heats will be followed by a final of heat winners and runners up over a course of about 100 metres.

Contestants are to bring their own frying pan – with a minimum diameter of seven inches - but pancakes will be provided. The pancake must be tossed once during the race, and the holding down of the pancake by fingers or thumbs is not permitted.

Sponsorship forms and money should be produced when checking in before the event at the Rugby Hotel - formerly the Three Horseshoes - in Sheep Street at 11.30am on the day for the race’s start at noon.

And those averse to exercise and embarrassment can simply donate and watch others make colourful fools of themselves.

Call Mr Byrne on (01788) 576011 by February 5 for more details and a sponsor form.
