How Barry’s life was saved - thanks to our air ambulance medics

A FAMILY day out to Draycote Water nearly ended in tragedy when granddad Barry Winrow started to feel strange symptoms.

He had been teaching his grandson, Adam, how to skateboard seconds before his life nearly ended.

“I thought my life was going to end right there at Draycote Water,” said Barry, 58.

“It was just an enjoyable family day out with my grandson and wife Susan. I was on Adam’s skateboard when I started to feel strange. I was clammy, sweaty and out of breath.”

Barry thought he’d just overdone it but when he sat down with his head in his hands he felt worse.

“I collapsed. Susan knew what to do straight away. She pulled me off the bench and put me in the recovery position.”

She phoned a land ambulance who arrived within minutes.

“They got me in the land ambulance but the wheels got stuck in the mud. I thought ‘this is it. I’m going to die’.”

The Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance arrived and got Barry to hospital.

“My heart arrested three times and I actually died at Walsgrave but they brought me back,” said Barry, who lives in Bedworth.

“I owe my life to all these people so I was happy to support their recent Air Ambulance Week.

Brave Barry even went back to the exact spot where his life nearly ended to complete a five mile walk in aid of the charity last month.

Now he is appealing for people to get behind the Baginton-based charity and help raise life-saving funds

He added: “The experience has changed my life. I’m happy go lucky now. If it hadn’t been for everyone’s quick actions, I wouldn’t be here to tell the tale.”

Telephone Jo Payne on 08454 130999 07825 840150 to get involved with fundraising.
