Hundreds of jobs have been transferred to Rugby borough from Coventry with the opening of Sainsbury’s new ‘product development centre.”

Some 530 people have tranferred to Ansty Park from the walsgrave Triangle business park. Sainsbury’s says the the centre, which opened last month, is fitted with state-of-the-art facilities including testing labs and a photo studio. It is used to test and develop merchandising, marketing and display ideas.

The Product Development Centre is an addition to the existing Beech and Cedar buildings at the site, which were vacant for two years after Ericsson left Ansty Park in 2010.

Roger Burnley, Sainsbury’s managing director of general merchandise, clothing and logistics, said: “We are very pleased to see the completion of our product development centre. It will play an important role as we work hard to deliver the very best shopping experience for our customers and grow our non-food business for years to come.”

Rugby MP Mark Pawsey said:“The opening is testament to the company’s continued growth and forward-thinking approach. This was the second time I have visited a Sainsbury’s site this week following my in-store advice surgery at the superstore in Rugby on! I am sure that the next time I hold my surgery in the store I will see first-hand the innovations being devised here in Ansty.”
