Long Lawford woman to live on just £1 a day for all of Lent

A charity worker from Rugby is spending just £1 a day on food for Lent to highlight the plight of the poor and impoverished.

Yesterday Gemma Hume of Long Lawford began a vegetarian diet with an emphasis on rice, porridge and potatoes after spending all but 11 pence of her £7 weekly allowance.

The 35-year-old, who works as a communications officer for development charity Practical Action, is raising funds for the Warwickshire-based charity after deciding to take on the 100km Nightrider cycle challenge.

She explained: ““I’m a real foodie, so this is going to be a massive challenge for me, but it will give me a real-life insight into the heart-breaking choices that some of the poorest people in the world have to make every day.

“I wanted to do something to raise awareness of the 1.4 billion people living in extreme poverty – people who live on less than £1 per day.”

Last December Rugby Foodbank, which gives Rugbeians emergency food packages, had a record month, helping over 300 hungry people.

Gemma’s menu for today: breakfast – porridge (made with water) with spoon of jam, lunch – dry potato salad with vegetables, dinner – chick pea curry with rice.

Gemma’s food selection for week one includes a bag of oats, a jar of jam, a packet of potatoes, a tin of sweetcorn, a tin of peas, three carrots, six tomatoes, a tin of kidney beans, a tin of chick peas, three tins of tomatoes, four bananas, a bag of rice and four onions.

It’s thought that 1.4 billion people live on less than £1 per day world-wide.
