Longest-serving Rugby Borough Council employee gives up bin round

William (Bill) Dodd receives a certificate and toast marking 44 years continuous service from Sean Lawson (L) Head of Environmental Services and Cllr Kathryn Lawrence, Mayor of Rugby.

RUGBY Borough Council’s longest serving member of staff has called it a day - after more than 44 years on the streets.

William Dodd, known as Bill, has retired from his job as a bin man, having emptied an estimated 1.5 million bins weighing around 10,000 tonnes.

Bill joined Rugby Urban District Council on 7 October 1968, when councils did very little recycling. Reuse and repair meant that the amount of waste that households generated was much lower than today, though there was a considerable amount of ash and cinders from solid fuel fires. The bins at that time were very dirty, dusty and heavy.

Sean Lawson, Rugby Borough Council’s Head of Environmental Services, said: “No-one knows exactly how far Bill will have walked during his time with the council, but based on today’s rounds we think he may have chalked up around 80,000 miles on official council duty - that’s more than three times round the globe.

“Having completed 44 years and 3 months for the council, more than two life sentences, Bill fully deserves some time off. I wish him a long and happy retirement, and on behalf of the council thank him for his loyalty and dedication.”

Bill retired from council service on 31 December, but was treated to a special reception with the Mayor, where he was presented with a commemorative certificate, before Christmas.
