Major contemporary craft exhibition tour arrives in Rugby
VISITORS to Rugby Art Gallery and Museum will have an opportunity to view the best craft work from the region in a new exhibition opening on Saturday.
Made in the Middle Made is an open exhibition originated by Craftspace, a Birmingham based craft development agency, and is selected by an expert panel.
The exhibition includes the work of 35 craft makers offering an insight into the skill, creativity and innovative practice within the Midlands region. The range of disciplines include ceramics, glass, metalwork, jewellery, textiles, wood work and mixed media from recent graduates to makers with over 30 years experience. The majority of works are for sale.
Selected exhibitors include pioneering textile artist Amy Twigger Holroyd who is developing a technique called ‘stitch hacking’ while Janette Matthews explores the potential of laser cutting in developing 3D textiles. Stunning ceramic pieces by James and Tilla Waters will be available for sale alongside work by Anna Collette Hunt. Beautiful vessels by Kevin Grey and Imogen Luddy’s stainless steel laser cut furniture demonstrate the possibilities available to makers working in metal.
In a changing economic climate this Made in the Middle, the seventh in the exhibition series, considers ‘Pathways to Craft’ through selected case studies that illustrate the various routes to careers in craft making. The exhibition aims to demonstrate alternative ways to approach making, not only through the exhibitors’ experiences but also through the action research project Apprentices in the Making.
Emma Daker, Exhibition Organiser, said: “In light of the current economic climate and University course closures within the arts, we are interested in exploring ‘Pathways to Craft’ through the exhibition.
“In addition to the makers who have accessed the industry through higher education, we will also be featuring those exhibitors who have adopted alternative routes into craft.”
The exhibition will continue its 18 month tour to major galleries across the Midlands until July 2013 and will raise the profile of regional makers and give them the opportunity to sell their work to Regional and National collectors.
Visitors are encouraged to consider commissioning new work from local makers and a range of more affordable work will be available to buy within the exhibition whether your budget is a few pounds or a thousand pounds.
Made in the Middle runs from 12 January to 9 March 2013, and admission is free.
