Newbold Quarry footpath closed by landslip

A footpath at Newbold Quarry has been closed after a landslide took away ten feet of quarry bank.
The landslip, which has affected a section of the main footpath linking the Glebe Estate and the canal, has also left cracks in the ground that are still moving.
Chris Worman, Rugby Borough Council’s parks and grounds manager, said: “Although ground conditions across the borough are very wet, this was quite a surprise as there are no known water sources in this location and it is not near to the overflow for the canal.
“At the moment we cannot be sure that more of the quarry bank won’t fall in, so we have had to close the footpath.
“The bank has fallen away bringing the side all the way up to the footpath, so it clearly isn’t safe at the moment.”
The council is seeking specialist advice before deciding when it is safe to reopen the footpath. Both ends of the route have been blocked by temporary fencing.
