Pedestrianisation scheme welcomed by Rugby First

The funding, recently agreed by Rugby Borough Council and Warwickshire County Council, for a proposed new pedestrianisation scheme in Rugby town centre, has been welcomed by Rugby First.

The project, still subject to public consultation, will see the introduction of a pedestrianised area running from the top of North Street to the traffic lights at the top of Regent’s Street.

Within the scheme a single bus and taxi lane will be created, where pedestrians will have priority.

The new scheme, which has been altered from an earlier proposal, will give the town centre a focal point, a new event/civic space, a new home for the market, link St Andrew’s to the town more closely and help connect the two sides of the town centre, which are currently divided by the road.

A key difference between this scheme and the initial one is that parking conditions in Regent/Albert Street will be unaffected, although businesses will likely benefit from increased footfall as a result of the higher traffic flow through the area.

Buses and taxis will only be permitted to use North Street.

Aftab Gaffar, Rugby First Managing Director said: “I genuinely believe this is very positive news for Rugby. The investment in the town centre, by the two councils, shows real commitment towards the future growth and development of Rugby. We are incredibly lucky to receive this level of funding, in the current climate, and unlikely to be offered it again so we must seize the opportunity to make a real difference to our town centre.”

Aftab continued: “I do understand some of the concerns raised by people in the paper last week, but many of those comments were based on the old pedestrianisation scheme. Public consultation for the project will start after May and I would encourage people to take a look at the new plans and base their views on fact rather than speculation.”
