Photography competition opened to youngsters
YOUNG people across the county are being invited to snap some positive poses of themselves and their friends doing good things in local communities.
Warwickshire MYPs and the VOX youth council, supported by Warwickshire County Council, have launched a photo competition as part of their campaign to tackle the negative stereotyping of young people. Youngsters aged 11-18 from across Warwickshire are being asked to take photos of positive examples of youth activities, with prizes offered for the best entries. The submitted images will also be used within, and by the county council, to promote its work with children and young people.
Youth Councillor Josh Ellis, aged 15 from Alcester Academy explains the motivation behind the campaign and the competition. He said: “We wanted to do something to stop the negative stereotyping of young people.
“To break down barriers and make a difference, we need to take the first step to earn the support and respect of older generations and show them how much we care about local and national issues and about how people see us.”
The competition welcomes creativity of expression in the entries which could portray young people helping out in local communities, supporting other people, or pursuing personal interests - anything that shows them in making a difference and a positive contribution.
Wendy Fabbro, Director of Children’s Services for Warwickshire County Council is backing the campaign, and will be involved in judging the competition. She said: “I have been impressed with how the young people have attempted to tackle negative youth stereotyping.
“The competition concludes their year of campaigning, which has also surveyed people on their perception of young people and a successful debate with representatives from local media about their views on the issue.
“I hope many young people will demonstrate teenagers’
engagement in their local communities by submitting their positive poses, and I look forward to helping to judge the entries in the new year.”
Entries should be sent with a caption and the young person’s name, age and address to youthtake2@warwickshire.gov.uk by the closing date of 31 January 2013. They will be judged in three age categories (11-13, 14-16,17-18) with one overall winner chosen.
Prizes include family and friends theme park tickets, high street gifts vouchers and professional prints of the winning image and the runners up.
Winners will be announced at the youth council elections event on 28 February 2013.
