Pizza takeaway is coming to Regent Street

THE opening of pizza takeaway outlet in Rugby town centre could create 17 new jobs.

A former solicitors in Regent Street could soon be turned into a pizza takeaway after Rugby Borough Council granted planning permission to convert the empty building.

SME Pizza (2) Limited applied for permission to change the use of the building and to convert the space above into a three bedroom flat.

It has not yet been confirmed which company will take over the unit but Pizza Hut has shown an interest. It would open seven days a week from midday to 11pm, creating 17 full and part time jobs.

A spokesperson for Pizza Hut, said: “We can confirm that we’re looking to open a Pizza Hut Delivery store in Rugby to satisfy the demand from our fans but as yet, no site has been finalised. A new store would create around 20 jobs in the community, and we hope to have some good news soon.”

But the news of the takeaway has not gone down well with some independent traders in the area and the council received five letters of objection.

Anne Cole, owner of Klickers, said: “If it was going to be a Pizza Hut restaurant that would be good because it would bring people to the area in the daytime. But a takeaway won’t make any difference and who’s going to pick up the rubbish?”

Bev Thomas, owner of Etcetera and Etcetera Style in Regent Street, added: “I feel it’s in the wrong place. The independent quarter is a different concept. There is also a concern about rubbish.”

Not everyone in the street is unhappy though.

Ian Madden, owner of Rugby Dry Cleaners, said: “I want it to open. It would be a good thing.

“I always get hungry in the shop so I can pop round for my lunch.”
