Police name woman who died in M1 crash near Rugby

A woman died on the M1 near Rugby after the car she was in was involved in a collision with a van.

The woman who died in the accident has been named by police as Kathleen Ann Coton, 64, from Nottinghamshire.

She was the passenger in a silver Mercedes C Class, which was involved in a collision with a white Mercedes Sprinter van, one mile south of Watford Services.

The collision took place at around 1.20pm on Thursday afternoon last week, when the C class was parked on the hard shoulder.

The 70-year-old woman driving the car and a 70-year-old man who was a passenger in the car, both sustained life threatening injuries.

They both remain in hospital with serious injuries.

The 30-year-old-man who was driving the Sprinter van was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on bail, pending further enquiries.

Police closed the southbound section of the motorway from junction 18 at Crick down to Northampton.

The accident caused huge traffic problems on all surrounding roads for the majority of the afternoon and evening.
