Popular Pamela mourned
A former Rugby town planner and popular party hostess has died – just six weeks after being diagnosed with cancer.
Pamela Smith was married to David Smith, a well-known member of Rugby Rotary Club, and himself a former director of technical services at Rugby Borough Council.
Pamela came to Rugby to work in the then newly-formed planning department of the borough council following the major reorganisation of local government that took place in 1974. She successfully completed a post graduate course at Birmingham Polytechnic where she was awarded a Diploma in Town Planning and was elected as a Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute in 1978.
She died aged 60 on February 7, having enjoyed a successful career in the private sector since 1987, culminating in her establishing her own practice. Her husband, David, said: “Pamela is sadly missed by her family, my family and her very wide circles of friends both locally and throughout the country.”
Pamela acted for a wide range of clients, including local authorities, health authorities, major house builders, developers and private clients. In 1990 she moved to Staverton, where she became known for organising successful fundraising events for the village hall.
David added: “She was a renowned hostess, being highly regarded for her culinary skills, and was a lover of fine dining and good wine.”
