People with learning disabilities will now have safe places to go if they feel threatened in Rugby town centre.

Some 14 businesses have signed up to the Safe Places scheme, offering help and refuge for those feeling threatened or endangered. National research suggests nine out of ten people with a learning disability have been targeted with verbal harassment or violence.

Cllr Izzi Seccombe, who helped launch the scheme this week, said: “For too long, vulnerable people have been prevented from doing the everyday things we take for granted for fear of being harassed, bullied or attacked. By joining forces with the whole community, and showing the Safe Place symbol in as many places as possible, we can give people confidence to lead fulfilled lives in their communities.”

Inspector Paul Judson of Rugby Police said: “We are keen to encourage people who are victims of disability-related hate crime and harassment to report this to police. This scheme is yet another method of making it easier for victims to do so.”

The police hate crime helpline number is 0845 129 2221. Call 01926 742414 or visitwarwickshire.gov.uk/safeplaces
