AFTER finishing runner-up three years in a row the Queen Victoria pub has been crowned Rugby Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) Pub of the Year 2011.

The Lower Hillmorton Road venue beat around 120 other pubs in and Rugby in Camra’s poll, which attracted the highest number of votes from Camra members ever. The pub will now go forward to represent Rugby in the Warwickshire pub of the year competition, an award the town has won several times recently.

Nick Pugh, who owns the pub and Rugby’s Atomic Brewery with business partner Keith Abbis, said he was delighted with the award.

“Although we’ve worked very hard here since we took the pub over five years ago it’s not something I expected. It’s also a great achievement for everyone here because there’s such stiff competition in Rugby – as ale drinkers will know.”

Steve Heighton from Camra said: “The Victoria is a fantastic example of how to run a successful pub with real ale at the forefron. The Victoria Inn is the home to Atomic Ales, which is gaining a national reputation for quality beers.”
