VOLUNTEERS who use their vehicles to help in bad weather have been named ‘heroes of the day’.
Graeme Smith, Warwickshire’s Chief Fire Officer and chair of Warwickshire Prepared, has welcomed news that a group of 4x4 drivers who voluntarily use their vehicles to help communities in all weather conditions, has been named as one of BBC Coventry and Warwickshire Radio’s ‘heroes of the day’.
The Midland Rover Owners Club 4x4 Response, a sub-group of the long-established MROC, is a volunteer organisation which has formed a partnership with local authorities and brings assistance in emergency situations when the vehicles can be of unique use.
Over this last weekend, the Midland Rover Owner’s Club (MROC) was out and about in the Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire areas, transporting doctors and district nurses on their essential rounds. T.his enabled the nurses to make those crucial home visits and administer medicines and care to critically ill and end-of-life patients.
Over 20 volunteers and their Land Rovers gave their services over the weekend, beginning on Friday evening, when the snow and ice made driving conditions treacherous.
Graeme Smith has applauded the work of the volunteers and expressed delight that they have received this acknowledgement. He said: “This group carries out an incredible service to communities – not just their own – and can only do so because of the generosity and good will of its volunteers.
“We are delighted to have them as a partner, helping us to protect the people of Warwickshire in times of emergency.
“I am thrilled they have received this recognition for the selfless work that they do. These home visits are absolutely crucial and it is hard to imagine that the medical staff could do their work so effectively without the huge contribution of the volunteer drivers.”
