Rugby councillor speaks out to make street light switch-off operation plans clear

WARWICKSHIRE County Council’s portfolio holder for Highways and Transport has moved to clarify the situation surrounding the forthcoming move to part night lighting in Rugby.

The move to part night operation of street lights will be introduced in the Rugby borough on February 1.

This has already been introduced in Warwick District.

The lights are switched off at midnight from Sunday to Thursday until 5.30am. For a trial period, weekend operation times are being introduced so that, on Saturday and Sunday mornings, the switch off is between 1am and 6.30am to accommodate those who are out and about on Friday and Saturday nights.

Cllr Peter Butlin has moved to clarify what the county will be doing after 1 February. He said: “We have listened to people in Warwick where the switch off has already happened. One of the issues that arose was that the timings of switching lights off did not meet what people wanted at the weekends where their work and social patterns mean they are more inclined to be out later.

“We have always said that we would monitor and review the part night operation of street lights and so we acted upon this feedback and are trialling the new weekend hours in Warwick and will do the same elsewhere in Warwickshire.”

Speaking about community safety, Cllr Butlin said: “There is a feeling among some people that turning off the lights will have a detrimental effect on community safety but this is not borne out by any evidence in other authorities where part night operation is in place.

“We have worked with Warwickshire Police when deciding which lights in Warwickshire should remain on and have taken their advice. We will continue to liaise with the Police as the scheme is rolled out across Warwickshire.

“Of course, there will still be incidents but, based on the experience of others, we do not believe that crime rates will see an increase.”
