Rugby MP celebrating National Apprenticeship Week with visits to GE Energy and Alstom

During National Apprenticeship Week, Rugby MP Mark Pawsey has supported the Prime Minister’s vision for it to become ‘the new norm’ for young people to either go to university or start an apprenticeship.

Across Rugby, 1,020 people started apprenticeships in the academic year 2011-12, and another 320 have started in the first quarter of this academic year.

This is a percentage increase of 79 per cent compared to Labour’s last year in office.

Mr Pawsey said: “Conservatives in Government are investing in apprenticeships to ensure that the country has the skills it needs to compete in the world and people across Rugby are benefitting from this. I know from work that I have seen at local businesses here in Rugby that apprenticeships are a win for the individual and a win for the business.

Mr Pawsey continued: “National Apprenticeship this week provides a great opportunity to celebrate the positive impact that apprenticeships have on individuals, businesses and the economy and I am looking forward to meeting apprentices at both GE Energy and Alstom here in Rugby later this week.

“It is fantastic news that over a thousand people started an apprenticeship in Rugby in the 2011-12 academic year. 320 have started in the first quarter of this year which means we are on course to do as well again. These stats show a 79 per cent increase from Labour’s apprenticeship record in Government. I wholeheartedly welcome any attempts that ensure we as a society see completing an apprenticeship as similar to graduating from a degree programme”.
