Rugby MP Mark Pawsey calls on Government to look into the costs of closing down Myson House
QUESTIONS have been raised about the costs of closing down an office block in Rugby.
The closure of Myson House in Wood Street, where 170 General Social Care Council jobs will be lost, was highlighted on the front page of this week’s Rugby Advertiser.
Staff were told that Government cuts have led to the organisation being scrapped later this year.
Conservative MP Mark Pawsey has now called upon the Government to look into the costs of closing down the Rugby based General Social Care Council (GSCC) and transferring its tasks to the Health Professions Council in London.
Mr Pawsey raised the issue of higher office costs and wages in the capital and has asked for the decision to close the Rugby based quango to be discussed further by Government ministers.
Speaking after questioning the leader of the House, Sir George Young, Mr Pawsey said: “The announcement to close the GSCC was made some 18 months ago and upon discovering the news I immediately wrote to the relevant Government Minister to ask for clarification as to why the decision had been made.”
“It is always a tragedy when people lose their jobs and the Government’s decision to close a number of quangos across the country was not taken lightly. Since the decision was made back in 2010 I know that the management team at the GSCC have been working tirelessly to support, and guide, those members of staff who have been affected.”
Responding to Mr Pawsey’s question Sir Young stated that the Government had been forced into some difficult decisions on public sector expenditure and confirmed that he would raise the issues Mark had highlighted within Government.
