Singing man given criminal anti-social behaviour order to protect people in Rugby

A pensioner who made sexual advances towards a woman – and repeatedly kissed her in a Rugby street - has been given a criminal anti-social behaviour (Crasbo) order in a bid to curb his behaviour.
District Judge Melville Strongman granted the five-year order, which forbids Andrew William Pollock from serenading or singing to any female in a public place or on public transport, or from going into named retail premises in the town.
He must not enter the Myton Hospice charity shop in Albert Street, Rugby, not enter shops in Clock Towers shopping centre, or enter Marks & Spencer in High Street or WH Smith in Market Place.
Furthermore, he must leave any retail premises if asked to do so.
Prosecutor Naila Iqbal applied for the Crasbo when 73-year-old Pollock, of Bath Street, Rugby, appeared before Nuneaton magistrates on Friday.
The Crown sought the order after Pollock pleaded guilty to an offence of sexual assault at the same court on January 29. Magistrates sentenced him to a two-year community order, with supervision, and told him to sign on the sex offenders’ register for five years.
Miss Iqbal said the Crasbo was “necessary to protect the people around Rugby town centre.
“Mr Pollock has been involved in a number of incidents where he was been a danger and, I believe, a nuisance to women.”
Referring to the incident for which Pollock was sentenced in January, the prosecutor said: “He was singing and walking towards the complainant and singing to her, serenading her. This resulted in him slapping her and kissing her to the face.”
Miss Iqbal said Pollock had in the past been given letters warning him about his behaviour.
At the earlier hearing magistrates were told the victim of the sexual touching offence, on October 11 last year, became aware of Pollock – who was over the road, singing – when she went to a parking ticket machine in Albert Street, Rugby.
“He told her ‘You’re beautiful, you’re gorgeous’ and began to sing between [making] these comments.
“He was coming towards her and put his left arm around her shoulder. He put both arms around her body and tried to kiss her face.
“The woman said he had her in a ‘lock’ and started kissing her face six or seven times in quick succession.”
Pollock “appeared to seek some sexual gratification” by his actions but, added the prosecutor, he denied slapping the victim’s back or bottom. The woman felt “violated and disgusted” and said she wanted to make a formal complaint about him “forcing himself on me in a sexual manner.”
After detailing the conditions of the Crasbo on Friday, District Judge Strongman told Pollock: “If you breach any of these terms you are liable to go to prison for five years.”
Pollock replied: “I have to walk a straight line for five years.”
