CONCERNED people living in and around Addison Road want action to be taken before someone is seriously hurt or killed because of heavy traffic.

They met Rugby borough councillors and senior officer Roger Bennett from Warwickshire County Council to discuss road safety this week.

The hotspots are Addison Road, Lawford Road and Somers Road industrial estate in New Bilton.

Andrew Crane, chairman of the New Bilton Road Safety Group, said: “I’m really concerned for the most vulnerable in our local community.

“On a daily basis I’m witnessing a non-stop procession of heavy vehicles passing along coming from Lawford road into Addison road to access the Somers road Industrial Estate.”

Mr Crane said it makes him feel “physically sick” when he sees heavy vehicles mounting pavements where young children are walking with their parents to nurseries. It’s just not right - the whole community have had enough of it”.

Secretary of the road safety group, Lauren Brayson, lives in Addison Road.

She said: “Since the Western Relief Road has been opened I haven’t had one night’s sleep. The constant racket and vibration from these vehicles has had a terrible impact on my life and many of my neighbours.”

Councillors and residents attended the area forum meeting yesterday (Wednesday). The area’s Labour Party county council candidate Maggie O’Rourke said: “We will not stop campaigning until something has been done to address the well founded concerns of the local community. We will continue to work with the New Bilton safety group and local residents and lobby local businesses and ask them to look at ways of tackling this problem.”
