University Hospital Coventry cancels non-emergeny operations for 72 hours
RUGBY’S nearest accident and emergency hospital has cancelled non-emergency operations until at least tomorrow due to “significant winter pressures”.
University Hospital Coventry released a statement today saying it had seen a rise in the number of patients needing specialist treatment and had struggled to free up beds. The trust who manages the hospital said it was contacting people affected by the cancellations.
The statement said: “The Trust is cancelling some non-emergency operations and outpatient appointments from today (Tuesday 12th February 2013) for the next 72 hours due to significant winter pressures at University Hospital, Coventry. The decision was taken today after the hospital experienced high levels of demand from patients with complex conditions.
“We have been contacting patients who may be affected and are encouraging people due for surgery this week to call the number provided in their patient letter to find out whether their operation has been postponed.
“The Trust would like to remind the public that attending A&E or calling 999 should be used in a critical or life-threatening situations. If you aren’t sure and need help or advice call NHS Direct on 0845 4647.”
