Urgent police appeal and warning after dangerous railway detonators stolen from Stretton Wharf

POLICE have issued a warning after six detonators were stolen from Stretton Wharf near Rugby.

The railway detonators were stolen sometime between midday and 1pm yesterday (Wednesday) from a white van parked in Smeaton Lane, near Stretton Wharf, Stretton under Fosse.

A blue and grey rucksack containing sandwiches was also stolen.

The detonators are designed to emit a loud bang on impact and are placed on the track by rail staff to warn maintenance workers working further along the line of approaching trains.

The detonators are small discs, approximated 5cm in diameter with two lead strips on either side and could be very dangerous in untrained hands, particularly children or teenagers.

A spokesman for Warwickshire Police said: “We are obviously concerned for the safety of the individuals who have the detonators, regardless of their age, and would urge anyone who finds the detonators or has information on their whereabouts to contact us as soon as possible.”

Please contact Warwickshire Police on 101 or 01926 415000 quoting incident 100 of 9 January 2013.
