An array of colourful characters dashed through Sheep Street on Tuesday for Rugby Rokeby Lion’s annual ladies’ pancake race.

The spectacle raised well-over £1,200 for Rugby Young Carers and other local causes supported by the Lions. First-timer Jenny Varnish of Rugby Borough Council clinched overall winner, beating last year’s champion Helen Wilce to the coveted Pancake Shield. Clair Woleczek, also of Rugby Borough Council, managed to raise the most sponsorship, a total of £238. The Best Dressed Award went to Fiona Heywood of Herbert Brown.

After her win, Jenny, who tore down the track in a yellow M&M suit, said: “I was roped into doing this by my colleagues at the borough council but I’m glad I entered because it was great fun. I didn’t expect to win either so that came as a complete surprise.

“I’ll almost certainly do it again next year to defend the title, I don’t think my colleagues will give me much choice, either way.”

The money raised will go towards Rugby Young Carers, which works with carers as young as eight to help improve their lives and provide respite. Many of the young people care full or part time for people with illnesses, disabilities or drug and alcohol dependency.

Lion Terry Byrne said after the event: “Rugby Rokeby Lions would like to thank all the contestants, businesses and individuals who helped make 2013’s race so successful. There were some fantastic costume efforts and everyone who took part managed to do a great job raising and collecting funds.

“We’re delighted to choose Rugby Young Carers as this year’s chosen charity, the money raised will help hard-working young people from across the borough cope with their roles as carers for loved ones.”
