Villagers vote for action group to stop wind turbines

ANTI-WIND FARM campaigners joined forces for a mass picket in Churchover last night (Wednesday).

It took place outside the exhibition staged by Scottish and Southern Energy, who want to develop an area near Bransford Bridge, to the north of the village.

Emotions ran high at a recent Churchover Community Meeting.

Residents from Churchover and the Rugby area packed the village hall to make their feelings known.

They voted unanimously in favour of setting up an action group to co-ordinate the community’s campaign against the proposal by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE).

The company wants to build 125-metre high subsidised wind turbines around the village

MEP Roger Helmer, Tony Leatham, an Engineer and Chris Down, an independent planning consultant, gave well received speeches.

Mr Helmer told the meeting: “Onshore wind farms are not only a threat to villages, homes and lives but they are also a major threat to Britain’s energy security.”

Mr Leatham said: “From my first hand experience I am sceptical about the integrity of wind farm developers.”

Lorne Smith, a local resident, who chaired the successful meeting, added: “Our opponents will try to paint us as NIMBYs (Not In My Back Yard).

“Yes, we should be proud of defending our communities but we also have a moral duty to try to expose this subsidised wind turbine ‘scam’.”

Protesters said they want to persuade SSE to return to Perth, Scotland and leave Rugby villages alone. For more information on the campaign, email fightchurchoverwindfam@finegolf.co.uk
