BROWNSOVER’S only pub, which is described as the ‘hub’ of the estate, has closed.
The Merry Monk in Helvellyn Way closed its doors earlier this month and it is now up for sale.
Cllr David Cranham (Con, Brownsover North) said: “It’s always sad to see a pub close down.
“It is the focal point and the hub of the estate.
“I hope the new medical centre and community centre that is going to be built on the estate could provide an alternative meeting place for people.”
The pub is described as having a ‘patchy’ history by Cllr Cranham with numerous changes in managements and periods of closure.
Cllr Claire Edwards (Lab, Brownsover South) added: “It’s a real shame that it’s closed. Some of the older residents have been going there for 30 years. It desperately needs refurbishing but it could be a really good pub.”
A sign has been put up on the door by LP Pub Management saying the Merry Monk has temporarily closed.
Scottish and Newcastle, which owns the pub, confirmed it was selling it.
