July 1, 1916

Alexandra Day and Pound Day was observed at Rugby on Saturday and was a great success. The ladies selling roses were early astir and so energetically did they push their sale that 27,928 blooms were disposed of and practically every person frequenting the streets wore one of the small flowers which testified to the fact that toll had been paid. Several 10s notes were paid for roses and a £1 note was taken at the Church Street stall by Miss Blythe.

July 1, 1966

A comprehensive system of education that would utilise only six of Rugby’s 11 secondary schools was recommended at a special meeting of Rugby Divisional Executive on Thursday, The five schools to be ‘axed’ have not been named. Of six all-through comprehensive schools, two would be co-educational, two denominational and two single-sex, leading to eight-form entry by 1980. The recommendation, which will be forwarded to Warwickshire County Council and proposed by Coun Arthur Taylor. It was carried by 16 votes to six.

Rugby is to play host to the inaugural ceremony of the Rugby World Cup on Saturday to coincide with town’s carnival. A hectic day of events is planned to include a peal of bells at St Andrew’s, cricket match on The Close, opening of a new museum at Rugby School, launch of the Rugby World Cup with musicals star Michael Ball singing a specially composed anthem ‘No More Steps to Climb’, recreation of the birth of the game and message-carrying ball relay.
