WARWICKSHIRE fish and chip shops have received a thumbs up after tests conducted by Warwickshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service revealed that all their cod products were genuine.
The high cost of cod compared with other types of fish have led some unscrupulous fish and chip shop owners across the UK to substitute cod for cheaper fish such as Vietnamese River Catfish (or River Cobbler) which can be up to half the price of genuine cod.
Trading Standards Officers visited 18 fish and chip shops in the Rugby, Stratford upon Avon, Nuneaton and Leamington Spa areas. Cod was purchased from each shop and sent off to be analysed.
The results revealed that in every case the fish sold was genuine cod.
Whilst officers were delighted with the results, they are warning consumers about the activities of rogue fish sellers who may be operating door to door across the County.
In the last few days, householders in neighbouring Leicestershire have reported being approached unexpectedly by door to door fish sellers and buying fish that weighed half the amount they were expecting. Others who purchased boxes of fish and were expecting smoked haddock, kippers, cod and sea bass, were actually sold fish cakes.
Warwickshire Trading Standards advises consumers to only use their regular fishmonger.
