THE M1 near Rugby reopened at 5pm last night (Thursday) following a serious accident that took place earlier in the morning.
The collision took place at 6.20am, when a blue Suzuki Ingnis was stationary on the hard shoulder.
The 63-year-old woman driver of the car was stood at the top of an embankment, when, for reasons yet unknown, a white large goods vehicle was in collision with it.
The collision resulted in the LGV climbing the embankment before turning over onto its side and colliding with a bridge support.
The 21-year-old woman driving the lorry sustained serious injuries and was taken to University Hospital by air ambulance.
The lorry driver is from Ireland and remains in a serious condition in hospital.
The driver of the car, who was from Essex, was stood on the embankment was not injured in the incident.
The closure caused traffic chaos around the area with queues as far back as junciton 17 for Dunchurch on the M1 and as far back as Kilsby on the A5.
