Richard's master of the mellow cello

A CELEBRATED cellist is coming to Rugby to perform two unique classical concerts.

Richard Jenkinson will play at Rugby Theatre on Sunday, April 19 in a specially-arranged concert called A Night at the Opera.

The cellist, who plays a 300-year-old instrument, has won great acclaim for his work which has taken him all over the world and on to national TV and radio.

The show is the brain-child of local entrepreneur Peter Bullard who had a chance meeting with the musician recently.

Mr. Bullard said: "I spotted Richard at a concert at Birmingham Symphony Hall and was immediately struck by his Classic FM music potential.

"I got talking to him and he said he would be very keen to perform in Rugby some time in the future.

"There followed several meetings with the Rugby Borough Arts Development Officer, which resulted in a decision to hold some concerts in Rugby in the future if finance from the lottery could be obtained.

"This was granted - much to my delight and surprise - and we have arranged two concerts, one in April and the next in May."

Mr. Bullard added that the concerts would suit all tastes of classical music fans.

"Both concerts are aimed at being highly accessible with something for everyone," he added.

"There will be music from peoples' favourite classics, many of which have been popularised on TV and in the movies.

"Myself and Richard would urge everyone to give something a bit different in Rugby a try."

Tickets for the show cost 12 and can be bought at Rugby Theatre on (01788) 541234.
